You will probably not be the only person interested in a placement with a particular company. It is also important to bear in mind that it costs the company both a lot of time and often money to supervise students on placements. So the trick is to make your chosen company realise that they can't do without you! Here are 6 tips:
First of all decide what you most enjoy about your job or training course.
Decide what you’re best at, and determine your personal qualities and skills.
Choose a company that matches those.
Learn everything you can about the company. Look at their website, do a Google search for their name and read what others have to say about them, ask your tutors, gather articles about the company from magazines and newspapers, etc.
Contact the boss, be friendly and explain the reason for your interest in the company.
Confirm any agreements by e-mail or in a letter.
CV TIPS
People with a lot of work experience use a different type of CV from starters like you. The 'skills' CV is more about your talents and what you’ve learned. Remember: the employer must gain a clear and positive impression of you! If you happen to come from a family in the same line of business, then don't be afraid to mention it. Below is an example of what you might include in your CV:
Personal details
name
address
telephone/mobile no.
email address
date of birth
Skills
what you’re good at
relevant achievements
work experience
education and training
schools
courses
Interests and personal qualities
hobbies, music, countries visited
the type of person you are (well organised, enthusiastic, serious, etc.)
